The maritime spirit of
Georgetown, South Carolina, was on glorious display once again at the 36th Annual Georgetown
Wooden Boat Show this past weekend. More than just a festival, this beloved event along the historic waterfront of Front Street is a vibrant celebration of our town’s rich history, masterful craftsmanship, and powerful community bonds.
For locals and tourists alike, it was a perfect weekend showcasing the heart of the Lowcountry.
A Festival Rooted in Craftsmanship and Community
The Wooden Boat Show, held annually every third weekend in October, is a highlight on the calendar for the entire Hammock Coast. This year’s 36th celebration brought an impressive fleet of over 100 classic wooden boats—ranging from sleek yachts to humble kayaks—all proudly displayed both on land and in the water along the Sampit River.
What makes this festival so special isn't just the boats; it's the experience.
- A Showcase of Local Talent: We took time to admire the work of the maritime artists and local craftspeople. Their dedication to preserving the nautical heritage of South Carolina was evident in every brushstroke and carved detail.
- The Thrill of the Challenge: A major draw of the weekend is always the Wooden Boat Challenge, where two-person teams race against the clock to build a seaworthy rowing skiff. The energy and cheer as they launched their handmade vessels was infectious!
- Family Fun on the Water: My family and I truly enjoyed the hands-on children's activities. Watching my kids design and decorate their small toy wooden boat, then cheering as they set it afloat in the pool with dozens of other enthusiastic little captains, was a perfect reminder of the simple joys this community provides. This focus on family is a huge reason the event is so heavily supported by locals and continues to draw thousands of tourists to our area year after year.
The Georgetown Wooden Boat Show is an annual cornerstone event that perfectly encapsulates the welcoming, creative, and history-rich atmosphere that makes Georgetown such a fantastic place to live.
