Historic District of Georgetown

Nestled in a quaint, idyllic location ripe with year-round social events, delicious cuisine, and diverse home styles.

Georgetown Historic District

Georgetown was the third city to be established in South Carolina. Formerly representing the second-largest seaport, the 6.5 square mile expanse is home to a rich history of intermingling cultures, including indigenous peoples, colonial American farmers, and seafaring pirates.

A quick jaunt from the bustling regions of Charleston and the Grand Strand, Georgetown is nestled in a quaint, idyllic location ripe with year-round social events, delicious cuisine, and diverse home styles.

Homes For Sale In Georgetown

If you take a drive along the winding roads of Georgetown, covered by centuries-old moss-draped oaks, you’ll be impressed with a range of German and Spanish architectural features among condominiums, preserved plantations, and modern new constructions. Waterfront properties regularly emerge on the market, overlooking Winyah Bay, the juncture of the Waccamaw, Pee Dee, and Sampit rivers.

How might one describe a standard Georgetown home? The variety of home styles makes such a task rather tricky. Over 50 antebellum mansions are sprawled across Georgetown, though typical listings are set amidst understated communities. From cherrywood and cypress to brick and stone, a mixture of materials comprises any given Georgetown home. Pastel-painted homes with wrap-around porches bolstered by stately colonnades are standard amenities for a Georgetown listing.

Other exterior and interior features include gorgeous arches, walk-in pantries, brand-new appliances, metal roofs, hurricane shutters, and spacious bedrooms. Upon taking a closer look, you’ll find unique trims, well-lit common areas, and beckoning fireplaces. Georgetown homes are perfect for entertaining guests and housing friends and family who will undoubtedly be chomping at the bit to visit.

Georgetown Amenities & Community

Regarding guests, the immaculate homes are hardly the only reason people gravitate to the Georgetown area. The charming town has been heralded in USA Today’s 10 Best ranking for several consecutive years since 2018. The town’s assets are highly regarded by singles, families, and retirees alike.

Perhaps the most exciting part of living in the Georgetown Historic District is one’s proximity to the water. Hoist your sails, launch your kayaks, and start your motors to set off onto one of three rivers that extend from Winyah Bay. The annual Georgetown Wooden Boat Show takes place on Historic Front Street and attracts thousands of boat builders and their fans yearly. Enjoy local street fare and cheer on your favorite builder as they race against the clock to construct a (hopefully) unsinkable craft from scratch.

Front Street is a central artery of the heart of downtown Georgetown. Local favorites like The River Room keep guests satiated with showstoppers like McClellanville crab cakes, chargrilled porterhouse pork chop with apple raisin chutney, and the beloved seafood sampler platter. More casual eateries like Rollin Local offer delicious sushi rolls in the form of a spicy salmon roll, California roll, or Ninja roll. Book a table to find out what all the fuss is about!

Local landmarks like Hobcaw Barony, the Kaminski House, and Hopsewee Plantation offer a portal into the past, where locals and tourists can educate themselves about Georgetown during the Civil War, Reconstruction, and Industrial eras. The SC Maritime Museum, which sponsors the Georgetown Wooden Boat Show, advertises several youth camps and up-close encounters with exciting naval artifacts.

There are three elementary schools serving K-5 youth on the edge of the historic district: Maryville Elementary, McDonald Elementary, and Kensington Elementary. Students in grades 5-12 have the option to attend the Georgetown School of Arts and Sciences, though most middle school students in grades 6-8 attend Georgetown Middle School, which is located directly across from Georgetown High.
